Thanks to Google Maps and countless other apps, we take maps and location services for granted. While these apps are extremely powerful and helpful when you’re navigating around your homeland, things can get complicated when you’re away form your home turf. Roaming charge in foreign countries are astonishingly high and your bill can run into hundreds of dollars even for some light surfing.

In times like these it is better to have offline maps to guide you through. Download the map for the country you’re heading to, and when you have stable Wi-Fi you can forget about the expensive data plans.

Google maps is one of the best of the big navigation apps along with Apple Maps and Waze (owned by Google also I think). I've been using since about 2014 and its always a headache if I missed a turn in a city. It will redirect to the next best turn, but by the time it loads the new route and narrates the instructions I've missed that turn as well. Geolocation: Displaying User or Device Position on Maps Overview This tutorial shows you how to display the geographic location of a user or device on a Google map, using your browser's HTML5 Geolocation feature along with the Maps JavaScript API. May 20, 2018  Apple Maps. Apple Maps is Apple's map application that's preloaded on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Car Play, and Apple Watch. It launched in 2012 with iOS 6.

Most of the apps listed here have offline search function so you can use them just like normal maps app and by turning on GPS (and not data) you can identify your current location and navigate easily. It won’t be as good as turn by turn navigation but it’s a lot better than being utterly lost.

The updated Google Maps app for Android and iOS has an offline feature but it’s really limited. You can only make the current area map offline. To do that just tap the search bar, scroll to the bottom and select Make this map area available offline. On iOS 7 it says Save map to use offline. To get the most out of the features of the updated maps app check out our detailed guide.

Google Maps is a web mapping service developed by Google. It offers satellite imagery, aerial photography, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets (Street View), real-time traffic conditions, and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle and air (in beta), or public transportation.

2. Maps With Me Lite For Lots Of Platforms

Maps With Me Lite is a free no nonsense offline app for a lot of platforms (including BlackBerry). You can download offline maps for any country you like, but make sure you do so on Wi-Fi before heading out into the wild because they are pretty big downloads.

India’s map was about 100 MB (and the entire USA, which you can cherry pick by states, will cost you around 1 GB). Once downloaded though, you can pinch to zoom and pan around any area you like and relevant information will keep popping up as you get deeper into a region.

When it comes to details, Maps With Me has the basics covered. You’ll find the names for major streets easily but anything deeper than that is just physical map with no contextual data. The pro app lets you search and bookmark locations within the app.

What is it good for? Maps With Me is one of those just so you have it kind of apps. Better to download it, you never know when you might need it.

3. Here Maps For Windows Phone

If you own a Nokia Lumia phone, Here Maps come preinstalled. You can also install the app on a variety of Windows Phone devices. Here Maps is to Windows Phone what Google Maps is to the rest of the world. That doesn’t mean they’re bad. Quite the contrary. If you live in Europe or India where Windows Phone market is quite good, Here Maps offer you localized features like traffic reports and free turn by turn navigation that’s sometimes better than Google’s offering. But this depends solely on your location.

You can use Google Maps on your Windows Phone if you like but for most people Here Maps is a better alternative. When you first start app, it will ask you to download maps for offline use. If you missed it, don’t worry. From the three dotted menu, select Download Maps and select Download New Maps and download the localized map for offline use.

What is it good for? If you’re on Windows Phone, this is your best (and the only good) bet.

4. Galileo Offline Maps For iOS

Galileo is like Maps With Me but better. The offline maps download sizes in Galileo are about 60% of Maps With Me. Saving almost half of download costs and storage space is no small feat. Galileo also allows you to search through the offline maps for free, a feature that’s locked behind the pay wall for Maps With Me.

Galileo is also a well rounded maps app. The paid upgrade gets you features like driving mode, GPS tracks recording, bookmarks and a lot more. But it’s only available on iOS so Android users should still stick with Maps With Me.

What is it good for? If you’re using an iPhone, Galileo is what you should go for. It’s free and has offline search support.

New Users: Before you can start using the Google Maps Platform APIs and SDKs, you must sign up and create a billing account. To learn more, see Get Started with Google Maps Platform.

Introduction

The Geolocation API returns a location and accuracy radius based on information about cell towers and WiFi nodes that the mobile client can detect. This document describes the protocol used to send this data to the server and to return a response to the client.

Communication is done over HTTPS using POST. Both request and response are formatted as JSON, and the content type of both is application/json.

Before you begin

Before you start developing with the Geolocation API,review the authenticationrequirements (you need an API key) and theAPI usage and billing information (you need to enable billing on your project).

Geolocation requests

Geolocation requests are sent using POST to the following URL:

You must specify a key in your request, included as the value of a key parameter. A key is your application's API key. This key identifies your application for purposes of quota management. Learn how to get a key. Malware protection for mac.

Request body

The request body must be formatted as JSON. The following fields are supported, and all fields are optional:

  • homeMobileCountryCode: The mobile country code (MCC) for the device's home network.
  • homeMobileNetworkCode: The mobile network code (MNC) for the device's home network.
  • radioType: The mobile radio type. Supported values are lte, gsm, cdma, and wcdma. While this field is optional, it should be included if a value is available, for more accurate results.
  • carrier: The carrier name.
  • considerIp: Specifies whether to fall back to IP geolocation if wifi and cell tower signals are not available. Defaults to true. Set considerIp to false to disable fall back.
  • cellTowers: An array of cell tower objects. See the Cell Tower Objects section below.
  • wifiAccessPoints: An array of WiFi access point objects. See the WiFi Access Point Objects section below.

Cell tower objects

The request body's cellTowers array contains zero or more cell tower objects.

  • cellId (required): Unique identifier of the cell. On GSM, this is the Cell ID (CID); CDMA networks use the Base Station ID (BID). WCDMA networks use the UTRAN/GERAN Cell Identity (UC-Id), which is a 32-bit value concatenating the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and Cell ID. Specifying only the 16-bit Cell ID value in WCDMA networks may return inaccurate results.
  • locationAreaCode (required): The Location Area Code (LAC) for GSM and WCDMA networks. The Network ID (NID) for CDMA networks.
  • mobileCountryCode (required): The cell tower's Mobile Country Code (MCC).
  • mobileNetworkCode (required): The cell tower's Mobile Network Code. This is the MNC for GSM and WCDMA; CDMA uses the System ID (SID).

The following optional fields are not currently used, but may be included if values are available.

  • age: The number of milliseconds since this cell was primary. If age is 0, the cellId represents a current measurement.
  • signalStrength: Radio signal strength measured in dBm.
  • timingAdvance: The timing advance value.

An example GSM cell tower object is below.

An example WCDMA cell tower object is below.

WiFi access point objects

The request body's wifiAccessPoints array must contain two or more WiFi access point objects. macAddress is required; all other fields are optional.

  • macAddress: (required) The MAC address of the WiFi node. It's typically called a BSS, BSSID or MAC address. Separators must be : (colon).
  • signalStrength: The current signal strength measured in dBm.
  • age: The number of milliseconds since this access point was detected.
  • channel: The channel over which the client is communicating with the access point.
  • signalToNoiseRatio: The current signal to noise ratio measured in dB.

An example WiFi access point object is shown below.

Geolocation responses

A successful geolocation request will return a JSON-formatted response defining a location and radius.

  • location: The user’s estimated latitude and longitude, in degrees. Contains one lat and one lng subfield.
  • accuracy: The accuracy of the estimated location, in meters. This represents the radius of a circle around the given location.

Errors

Google maps application for mac os x

In the case of an error, a standard format error response body will be returned and the HTTP status code will be set to an error status.

The response contains an object with a single error object with the following keys:

  • code: This is the same as the HTTP status of the response.
  • message: A short description of the error.
  • errors: A list of errors which occurred. Each error contains an identifier for the type of error (the reason) and a short description (the message).

For example, sending invalid JSON will return the following error:

Possible errors include:

ReasonDomainHTTP Status CodeDescription
dailyLimitExceededusageLimits403You have exceeded your daily limit.
keyInvalidusageLimits400Your API key is not valid for the Geolocation API. Please ensure that you've included the entire key, and that you've either purchased the API or have enabled billing and activated the API to obtain the free quota.
userRateLimitExceededusageLimits403You have exceeded the request limit that you configured in the Google Cloud Platform Console. This limit is typically set as requests per day, requests per 100 seconds, and requests per 100 seconds per user. This limit should be configured to prevent a single or small group of users from exhausting your daily quota, while still allowing reasonable access to all users. See Capping API Usage to configure these limits.
notFoundgeolocation404The request was valid, but no results were returned.
parseErrorglobal400The request body is not valid JSON. Refer to the Request Body section for details on each field.

Sample requests

Note: Mac addresses can change over time. For that reason, the examples on this page may result in an error message from the API.

If you'd like to try the Geolocation API with sample data, save the following JSON to a file:

You can then use cURL to make your request from the command line:

The response for the above Mac addresses looks like this:

(See Get a Key if you don't have an API key.)

For additional testing, you can gather information from your Android device using the Places SDK for Android and the Android Location APIs, and from your iOS device using the Places SDK for iOS.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I getting a very large accuracy radius in my Geolocation response?

Google Maps Application For Mac 2016

If your Geolocation response shows a very high value in the accuracy field, the service may be geolocating based on the request IP, instead of WiFi points or cell towers. This can happen if no cell towers or access points are valid or recognized.

To confirm that this is the issue, set considerIp to false in your request. If the response is a 404, you've confirmed that your wifiAccessPoints and cellTowers objects could not be geolocated.
